This city of Salamanca has a history dating back to the Celtic era. It is famous for its sandstone architecture, and for its University. Founded in the 1100s and a key intellectual centre in the 15th-16th centuries, the university continues to add to the city’s vibrancy with its international student population.
The famous cathedral is stunning, everywhere you walk in the old city you can see it, and I found it very difficult to take pictures of it. I had to do in sections. The new and old cathedral are joined together. It was constructed between the 16th and 18th centuries in two styles: late Gothic and Baroque.
Casa de las Conchas is a historical building in Salamanca. It currently holds a public library. Decorated with more than 300 shells, symbol of the order of Santiago, as well as of the pilgrims walking the Way of St. James.
I had a really enjoyable time in this city. When I was there it was full of local tourists, with very few foreigners, so it had a feeling of the real Spain. The old city is very compact; you can walk everywhere.
The Plaza Mayor in Salamanca, Spain is a large plaza located in the centre of Salamanca, used as a public square. It was built in the traditional Spanish baroque style and is a popular gathering area. This city is accessible from Madrid or Valladolid, and I guarantee there will be no disappointments here: you will enjoy it!
Thank you Gerson, another interesting post with awesome photographs!

Thank you for the virtual tour of the city of Salamanca! What beautiful buildings especially the cathedral! I bet many foreign tourists miss the sights by only focusing their attention on the capital of Spain.

Beautiful pictures – the first picture, the panorama of the city with all the rust-colored roofs and the blue spire (hope that would be the term) and the similar colored buildings is amazing.

Is Salamanca on the Way of St James? I didn’t know the shell was a symbol of both. What a wonderful historical city. 😊

I’m not sure if it’s on the way, but the shells symbolises it. Thanks you for your lovely comment!

I love so much of the architecture here…especially the photo over the rooftops of all the building. Really makes me feel the age of the town with no tall buildings around. So different from cities in modern times. 🙂
