The Sacred Mountain!

One  attraction that must be visited when in Bogota is the Mount of Monserrate. The views are truly spectacular from there. Monserrate is a mountain that dominates the city centre of Bogotá, the capital city of Colombia. It rises to 3,152 metres above sea level, where there is a church with a shrine, devoted to El Señor Caído.

 

You can take the funicular, or the cable car, or even walk all the way up there. It is well worth it for the views. It is very green up there, with lots of birds. I didn’t walk all the way up because I had a little altitude sickness.

 

 

 

The hill, already considered sacred in pre-Columbian times when the area was inhabited by the indigenous Muisca, is a pilgrim destination, as well as a major tourist attraction. In addition to the church, the summit contains restaurants, cafeteria, souvenir shops and many smaller tourist facilities.

 

 

The day I visited Monserate was the election day in Colombia so many of the tourist sites were closed. I decided to go up the hill and I had no regrets. It was one of the best days I spent in Bogota.

 

Monserate is a great place to visit if you’re around this interesting part of the world. At this place for more than four centuries, pilgrims and citizens have hiked the mountain to offer their prayers to the shrine of “El Señor Caido”.
