Where “New” is Five Hundred Years’ Old!

The incredible museum Castel Nuovo (literally, ‘New Castle’), also known as Maschio Angioino, looks very medieval. The building is amazingly well preserved, it has sculptures, and paintings from the 15th century.

The castle was called “Nuovo” (new) to distinguish it from the oldest castles already existing in the city, Castel dell’Ovo and Castel Capuano. Built between 1279 and 1284 at the behest of Charles I of Anjou and therefore also known as Maschio Angioino, it was largely rebuilt by Alfonso I of Aragon between 1443 and 1450.

 

 

When I visited the castle, it surprised me by how well preserved everything was. It gives you a glimpse of what it was like to live in medieval times. Due to its strategic position, the castle has the characteristics of a royal residence and also those of a fortress.

 

The castle was designed around a trapezoidal plan with five towers. The courtyard area is made up of Catalan elements such as the arcade with lowered arches and the external staircase made of piperno stone. It was designed by the Majorcan architect, Guglielmo Sagrera.

 

 

Currently the castle complex is intended for cultural use and is, among other things, the seat of the Civic Museum. The museum is divided between a permanent collection, changing exhibitions and cultural initiatives. 

 

It holds beautiful works of art. If you are into culture and art, and want to experience it, certainly this place is a must-see.
