The Mermaid’s Kiss!

Copenhagen is the capital of Denmark. It is a beautiful city with pristine waterways, modernist lights, bridges and cycling commuters. This dynamic city features progressive modernist architecture.

A great place to explore Copenhagen is walking by the canal, and around the pretty narrow streets. It is one of my favourite Scandinavian destinations. Now it is close to Xmas time, Copenhagen is a fantastic place to enjoy Christmas markets.

The Little Mermaid is a bronze statue by Edvard Eriksen, depicting the mermaid from the famous Hans Christian Anderson story . The sculpture is displayed on a rock by the waterside at the Langelinie Promenade.  The sculpture was inspired by ballerina Ellen Price, who in 1909 danced the lead role in the ballet The Little Mermaid at the Royal Theatre.

Nyhavn is a 17th-century waterfront, canal and entertainment district in Copenhagen, Denmark. Stretching from Kongens Nytorv to the harbour front just south of the Royal Playhouse, it is lined by brightly coloured 17th and early 18th century townhouses and bars, cafes and restaurants. The canal area has many historical  sites.

Strøget is a pedestrian, car free shopping area in Copenhagen, Denmark. This popular tourist attraction in the centre of town is one of the longest pedestrian shopping streets in Europe.

Copenhagen is definitely the ultimate place for Xmas shopping, and that’s certainly what I did!

  1. I enjoyed this post very much – very scenic, and, Copenhagen was a favorite place of mine when I took a Scandinavian/USSR trip back in 1983. I visited the places that you have so expertly spotlighted and our last night of our three-week tour was in Copenhagen on June 20th or 21st and they celebrated the first day of Summer. We stayed in a hotel across from Tivoli Gardens and got to see the fireworks. I was very surprised how small the Little Mermaid statue was because all the pictures make it appear it is much larger. I am behind in my reading of posts … got busy at work this year after the long holiday. Still have more to catch up on.
