Lost in the Caves

Visiting Batu Cave is a must. when you’re in Malaysia. It is very close to Kuala Lumpur, and easily done as a day-trip from there.  These limestone caves harbour Hindu temples where murals of mythic scenes gleam behind stalactites, bats flutter in the shadows, and troops of monkeys prey on hapless tourists.

The caves are guarded by a spear-toting gold statue of the Hindu deity Lord Murugan. The monument is massive and very impressive. It is a steep 272 climb up its steps to finally view the stunning skyline of the city.

The caves are always a colourful experience, but never more so than in late January or early February when hundreds of thousands of pilgrims converge during the three-day Thaipusam festival, in which devotees in a semi-trance walk in procession from Kuala Lumpur’s Chinatown to the caves.

There quite few caves there that you can visit.

One of the caves  is decorated with statues and scenes from the Hindu epic, Ramayana.

It is well worthy seeing this cave. It is very colourful and full of beautiful monuments inside.

If you are going to Kuala Lumpur, the Batu Caves are one of the top attractions you must visit. The Batu Caves are about 13 kilometres from Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia. It is very easily reached by train from KL central station.

  1. There are many limestone caves in the world. Some contain remnants of a distant past of human civilization, but this is first time that I read about temples and shrines having been set up in the caves of Malaysia. Very interesting post, my friend!

  13. Gorgeous from the outside and on the inside as well. I don’t think I’ve ever seen the inside of a cave so richly decorated. Fascinating. How amazing it would be to witness the pilgrimage first hand! I can just imagine all those people moving almost in rhythm with one another. Another great one! 😊

  22. Beautiful how nature and art intersect in these caves. Human hands have taken something already beautiful and gilded it. I was able to see these pics better than on some of your other posts. Still I think my monitor needs adjustment. Really enjoyed this escape. Thanks.

  23. After such a long time, seeing Lord Murugan. There are a lot of tamilians in Malaysia. It’s nice to see the ramayana depicted there. Today is the beginning of Lord Murgugan’s month, the kartekeya month. His festival is on 2nd December. I was informed my parents today and I saw your post… Great coincidence..
