The Lake District

My Journey to the Lake District was very long. I drove all the way from South London. I went to visit some friends. It took me seven hours, but it was a good experience as I could see the beautiful English countryside. I did quite a few stops on the way there, maybe that’s why it took me a bit longer. You can also take a train, that will take about three hours.

The Lake District, also known as the Lakes or Lakeland, is a mountainous region in North West England. A popular holiday destination, it is famous for its lakes, forests and mountains (or fells) and its associations with the early 19th century writings of William Wordsworth, Beatrix Potter and John Ruskin. Covering an area of approximately 2,362 square kilometres.

I really liked the late afternoon when I was there. All the differents lights ,and the sun setting gave the grass and hills this beautiful colourful glow.

You can do various walking tracks around the mountains. It’s very big area and very peaceful, you can hardly see any people around.

I think that the Lake District is very  picturesque with its lakes, valleys, woodlands and fells. It makes it one of the best places in Britain to go and experience the great outdoors, whether on a leisurely bike ride down country lanes or a day-long hike across the hills.

I went to The Lakes in late summer. It was very nice and sunny. I was lucky with the weather. I think the busiest times with tourists are between June and August.

Better to visit in the shoulder months: in April and May, when the weather is generally settled and sunny, or in September and October, when the woodlands blaze with autumnal colour.

There are lots of differents parts of the Lake District that you can visit. The main towns of Windermere and Ambleside make the most useful bases, with easy access to the main sights of the central Lakes – including the lakes of Windermere and Coniston Water, the scenic valley of Great Langdale, Wordsworth’s former homes near Grasmere and Beatrix Potter’s cottage at Hill Top.

 

I enjoyed my time in the Lake, and loved taking pictures there. I will definitely go back. I would advise you to take plenty of food and water and a detailed walking map; a compass is very useful, but only if you actually know how to use it! Take a mobile phone in case of emergencies, but don’t rely on being able to get a signal. Check the weather forecast before you leave.
